Patience Pays Off for Beschen

Surfing’s top men took their turn in the first round of the main event of the U.S. Open on Wednesday, and for those willing to play the waiting game, the payoff came in the form of decent waves and high scores.

Shane Beschen of San Clemente won his heat and advanced to the third round.

“The tide dropped a little when I was out there, but I stayed patient and waited for the right wave to come along,” said Beschen, who had one of the highest wave scores of the day, an 8.7.

Beschen, ranked second in the world, won the U.S. Open title in 1994.

“This is a prestigious contest to win,” he said, “and it’s also the start of the second half of the season so it would be nice to win the [U.S. Open] title again.”

Of the top 48 surfers competing, Beschen joined 15 others who advanced to the third round on Friday. Those who failed to win their heats Wednesday will surf today in single elimination, man-on-man heats.

Also advancing was world champion Kelly Slater of Cocoa Beach, Fla. Slater had no trouble winning his heat, which included upstart Chris Ward of San Clemente. He was second at the AirTouch Pro last week.

Slater demonstrated why he is No. 1. Slater scored 7.0, 7.50 and 6.68 on three waves to win the heat.

Other top surfers to advance included defending champion Rob Machado of Cardiff, AirTouch Pro champion Kaipo Jaquias of Hawaii, Conan Hayes of Hawaii, Jeff Booth of Laguna Beach and Sunny Garcia of Hawaii. Garcia and Booth scored the best waves of the day (9.0).

The top women also started competition Wednesday with 13-year-old Sophia Mulanovich of Peru drawing attention. Mulanovich, here with her mother, won two heats and took second in the third round of trials to advance to the first round of the main event.

Also doing well was Tahiti’s Patricia Rossi, who won her heats to advance.

In bodyboarding, Brian Wise and Jay Reale of San Clemente were first and second in their third-round heat of the men’s main event. World champion Mike Stewart of Hawaii and Guilherme Tamega of Brazil also advanced.
