Mo’s Teammates Advised to Save That Silk-Screen

Some of Mo Vaughn’s Boston Red Sox teammates, miffed when he didn’t bring any All-Star game souvenirs back with him, made up some T-shirts with a message aimed at the big first baseman.

On the front, they said, “All-Star Game ‘96” and on the back: “MO gets a $50,000 bonus and didn’t bring us any T-shirts back so we bought our own. Thanks for nothing!”

Vaughn laughed when he saw them and told his teammates they should have put “All-Star Game 1997” on the shirts too, because “If I go next year, you all will get nothing. Again.”

Upping the ante: Larry Walker has decided his Colorado Rocky teammates need some extra motivation when they’re on the road.

The injured outfielder has offered bonuses of $20 for hits, $20 for runs, $20 for game-winning RBIs, $50 for saves, $100 for wins by a starter, $50 for wins by a reliever and $200 for complete games.

The catch is, the Rockies have to win to collect.

Taxi anyone? Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist John Steigerwald was in Tokyo for an NFL exhibition game and came home with this observation:

Hall of Fame: To all those readers who wrote or called, complaining that Arky Vaughan of Fullerton and Bobby Doerr of Fremont were left off the list of Southern California high school players voted into baseball’s Hall of Fame, here is why: Vaughan and Doerr were not voted in by baseball writers, as were the eight mentioned, but were selected by the Veteran’s Committee.

The day after Dale won the Brickyard 400 stock car race, he and brother Glen played a round of golf at the Catawba Country Club. Glen aced the 205-yard 17th hole with a four-iron.

Double dipper: Sandy McCarthy, the lowest paid player in the NHL last year at $110,000, recently signed a three-year deal worth $2.5 million with the Calgary Flames.
