Latest Title Doesn’t Get a 10 From the Bryans

Twins Mike and Bob Bryan of Camarillo successfully defended their boys’ 18-and-under doubles title Saturday in the United States Tennis Assn. national junior championships at Kalamazoo (Mich.) College. It was their 10th national junior championship.

The occasion was bittersweet for the Bryans: Their three-set victory over Kevin Kim of Fullerton and Michael Russell of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. followed a Bryan-Bryan showdown in the singles semifinals.

Bob beat Mike, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4) to advance to today’s championship match against Kim.

The Bryans followed the singles match by winning their second national doubles title in three weeks with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Russell-Kim.

The Bryans, who won the USTA junior national clay court championship July 20, were the first repeat champions in Kalamazoo.

Bob, who is also the defending singles champion, defeated Russell, 6-4, 6-2, last month on clay in Louisville. Kim, Russell and the Bryans are all members of the U.S. junior national team.

The Bryans, 18, recent graduates of Rio Mesa High who will play for Stanford on scholarship next fall, earned an automatic wild-card berth into the U.S. Open doubles draw as national junior champions.

They were first-round losers in Flushing Meadow, N.Y., last year and also lost in the first round of the Infiniti Open at UCLA on July 31.

Ryan Redondo of Fallbrook upset Southern California champion Nick Weiss of Calabasas in the semifinals, 6-3, 6-3, in the USTA 14-and-under junior national championships in San Antonio, Texas.
