Brundage Energized by Powerful Memories

Share

Saturday’s power outage brought back memories for Dave Brundage of his minor league career.

Come to think of it, just about everything reminds the JetHawk manager of something from his nine-year minor-league playing career.

When Brundage was playing in Calgary, the power went out in the fifth inning.

“The pitcher was just in the middle of his delivery,” Brundage said. “I have no idea if he threw the ball.”

Saturday’s game at the Hangar was in doubt until the stadium power finally went on at 7 p.m., just 15 minutes before the scheduled first pitch. The game began at 7:51.

The JetHawks are in the midst of a lucky streak. In the past seven games, they have won three on fortunate breaks.

Friday night’s victory in the 11th inning came on a bases-loaded wild pitch. Last week they won in Visalia when an Oak outfielder dropped a routine fly ball with two out in the ninth, allowing the go-ahead run to score.

The JetHawks won in Stockton when the Ports lined into a double play, ending what would have been an excellent scoring opportunity.

“I really felt like [things were starting to go our way] when that guy dropped that ball in Visalia,” Brundage said.

JetHawk second baseman Jason Cook broke out of his one-for-42 slump Friday night with a home run and three hits. Needless to say, Cook was relieved to end the slump.

“I was packing my bags and ready to go home,” Cook joked. “I felt a little better the last few games. I was getting the barrel on the ball, but I just wasn’t hitting it to where people weren’t.”

Left-hander Jeff Pearce played catch Saturday afternoon. It was the first time he had thrown a baseball since going on the disabled list July 1.

“I’d been going out of my mind,” Pearce said of his idle time. “It had been driving me up a wall. I just hate sitting in the pen and not being able to do anything.”

Former JetHawk Jose Cruz Jr. was promoted from double A to triple A on Saturday. He will be the second JetHawk to play for triple-A Tacoma. Right-handed reliever Clint Gould made an emergency start for the Rainiers in June. . . . Right-handed reliever Eric Clifford left the JetHawks for a family emergency Saturday. He is expected to return in a few days.
