Williams Has Shoulder Surgery

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Williams had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder Saturday.

The procedure, performed by Dr. Warren King, showed frayed cartilage, some bursa scarring and an inflamed rotator cuff.

Williams will miss the rest of the season. King said he shouldn’t experience any problems with the shoulder next year.

Minnesota Twins reliever Dan Naulty is finished for the season after having surgery to correct a circulation problem in his pitching arm.

Naulty, a right-hander who was having a promising rookie season, had surgery Wednesday to remove part of a rib on his right side. It had been hampering blood flow to his arm, causing numbness. He is expected to be ready for the 1997 season.

The Chicago White Sox put pitchers Matt Karchner and Larry Thomas on the 15-day disabled list. The White Sox recalled infielder Greg Norton from triple-A Nashville and purchased the contract of reliever Rich Sauveur from Nashville. . . . Right-hander Sam Marsonek, the 24th player selected in June’s amateur draft, agreed to a minor-league contract with the Texas Rangers. . . . The Toronto Blue Jays put catcher Sandy Martinez on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained ankle injured in Friday night’s loss to the Minnesota Twins. Toronto recalled catcher Julio Mosquera from triple-A Syracuse. . . . Baltimore reliever Roger McDowell was scheduled to have surgery on his right shoulder Monday in Los Angeles. The team said McDowell has been moved from the 15-day to 60-day disabled list.
