Smith Works Out, Says He Will Play

Share

Emmitt Smith worked out in full pads Thursday in Irving, Texas, and pronounced himself fit for the Dallas Cowboys’ game Sunday against the New York Giants.

“I’m gonna play,” Smith said.

He had said Wednesday that he probably would be ready Sunday, although he was still sore from the back injury he suffered in Monday’s 22-6 loss at Chicago.

Team doctors have given Smith the OK to play.

“It’s still a game-day decision on his part, but he should be ready,” trainer Jim Maurer said.

Also working out in full pads was tight end Eric Bjornson, who has been battling hamstring problems since training camp and played only briefly Monday night.

Dennis Green got a Minneapolis judge’s permission to tell the Minnesota Vikings’ owners details of a lawsuit filed by a woman over an alleged abortion the coach paid her to have.

The lawsuit was dismissed.

The woman claims Green got her pregnant in 1992, his first year as the Vikings coach, and later paid her to terminate the pregnancy because he believed the baby would ruin his career.

Viking President Roger Headrick said he did not know when Green would talk with the owners. Headrick denied reports that the lawsuit had caused a rift among the 10 owners who control the team and said the team would evaluate Green’s status when the information was gathered, possibly by next week.

“He’s head coach until there’s a change, if there’s a change,” Headrick said. “But I don’t contemplate anything right now.”

If the judge agrees, punishment could include a fine, up to six months in jail or a combination of the two.
