Colorado State Gives Colorado a Close Game

Koy Detmer passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, and No. 5 Colorado survived an early scare to outslug in-state rival Colorado State, 48-34, Saturday night at Fort Collins, Colo.

Backup tailback Lendon Henry caught one of Detmer’s touchdown throws and ran for two more scores, while starter Herchell Troutman rushed for 184 yards.

Detmer completed 31 of 42 passes, including 14 in a row during one stretch in the first half, for 364 yards.

Colorado State (1-1) stunned Colorado (2-0) with three big plays in taking an early 14-7 lead.

No. 8 Texas 41, New Mexico State 7--Ricky Williams ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns as the Longhorns took advantage of early turnovers at Austin, Texas.

Texas (2-0) led, 31-7, at halftime and emptied their bench in the second half.

New Mexico State (0-2) closed to 14-7 early in the second quarter, but couldn’t contain Williams, who ran for 122 yards on 11 carries in the first half and had a 97-yard TD run called back for holding.

No. 21 Kansas State 59, Indiana State 3--Brian Kavanagh completed 19 of 22 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns, and Marlon Charles rushed for 195 yards and two more scores as the Wildcats (2-0) routed Division I-AA Indiana State (1-1) at Manhattan, Kan.

After taking a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, Kansas State seized a 31-0 halftime bulge with quick touchdown strikes that took one, seven and five plays.

Texas Christian 20, Oklahoma 7--Redshirt freshman Jeff Dover passed for two touchdowns as TCU spoiled John Blake’s debut as the Sooners’ coach by winning at Norman, Okla. The victory ended the Sooners’ 13-year streak of season-opening victories.

TCU (1-0), which joined the Western Athletic Conference this year, scored first when Michael Reeder kicked a 41-yard field goal in the first quarter, capitalizing on a fumbled punt return by Oklahoma’s Rodney Rideau.

Baylor 24, Louisiana Tech 16--Two touchdown passes by Jeff Watson staked Baylor to a two-touchdown lead in the first quarter and it never trailed at Shreveport, La.

Jerod Douglas’ 51-yard touchdown run expanded Baylor’s lead to 21-3 with 11:07 left in the third quarter, and freshman Kyle Atteberry’s 39-yard field goal with 1:07 remaining clinched the Bears’ season-opening victory after Tech (1-1) closed the gap to 21-16.

Texas Tech 31, Oklahoma State 3--Byron Hanspard rushed for a school-record 272 yards and scored two touchdowns, and Jaret Greaser kicked four field goals as the Red Raiders (1-1) rolled over the Cowboys (1-1) in a Big 12 game at Irving, Texas.

Hanspard carried 29 times and scored on runs of 72 and two yards.

Wyoming 41, Iowa St. 38--Cory Wedel kicked a 41-yard field goal in overtime for the Cowboys (2-0) at Ames, Iowa.

Wyoming rallied after Iowa State (0-1) led by 18 points late in the third quarter and by 15 with less than five minutes to play. The Cowboys tied the game, 38-38, on Len Sexton’s three-yard touchdown run with 1:53 left and Wedel’s extra point.
