OUTLOOK

Vander Sluis becomes the third coach in five years for the Seahawks. He faces the same obstacles that the recently departed John Donnelly did. Ocean View is not viewed as a football school by potential players and most of the area’s best opt to go elsewhere. Consequently, when Vander Sluis arrived from Vista High, he found only 17 lettermen back on the varsity and extremely low turnout at the lower levels. That aside, the new coach has liked what he has seen so far. “They work extremely hard,” he said. Taylor passed for 1,164 yards and 11 touchdowns a year ago and the Seahawks scored in double figures in all but one game. Seanoa offers massive size on both sides of the line, as do McClain and Acosta. Yet, the bottom line is that Vander Sluis, a newcomer to the area, will battle Ocean View’s reputation as much as he will his opponents.
