Corona del Mar Rolls Past Villa Park in Tennis

Ashley Harrington and Marisol Perea swept their doubles sets, 6-0, 6-3, 6-1, to help Corona del Mar, ranked No. 1 in Orange County, defeat second-ranked Villa Park, 14-4, Wednesday at Corona del Mar.

Ruchika Budhraja and McKenna Glasgow also swept in doubles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1, for the Sea Kings (3-0).

Faye DeVera, a two-time Times Orange County player of the year, won her three singles sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-1, for Villa Park (2-1). The Spartans’ only other point came in doubles from Talline Kojian and Shawna Lerer, who won one set, 6-1.

Nina Vaughan won two singles sets for Corona del Mar. Her doubles partner for junior tournaments, Villa Park’s No. 2 singles player Katey Becker, sat out because of a hip injury.

In other nonleague tennis:

Brea Olinda 14, La Quinta 4--Freshman Jackie Hasa didn’t lose a game in three sets for undefeated Brea Olinda (3-0). Teammate Kelly Scanlan won her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

Edison 14, Mission Viejo 4--Cerissa Drumm and Jaime Kunze swept their singles sets, each losing only two games, for host Edison (2-2), which won eight of nine singles sets. Michelle Baran and Annie Bennington swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1, for the Chargers, ranked seventh in Division III.

Irvine 9, Laguna Hills 9 (Irvine wins on games, 77-69)--Sarah Denson swept in singles, 6-4, 6-0, 6-1, for visiting Irvine (3-1), ranked ninth in Division I. Kim Kuwabara and Koryn Delbenes swept in doubles for the Vaqueros, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.

Katella 13 1/2, Fullerton 7 1/2--Kristen Sakamoto swept her two singles sets and teamed with Melissa Davidson to win in doubles, 6-2, for visiting Katella (1-2).

Los Amigos 16, Saddleback 2--Freshman Veronica Sommer swept in singles, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, for host Los Amigos (4-0). Alex Garcia and Seng Luu swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for the Lobos, who won all nine doubles sets.

San Clemente 12, El Modena 6--Nicole Bloch and Julie Manning swept at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-6, 6-0, for San Clemente (1-1). Holly Freudenberg swept in singles for El Modena, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0.

Savanna 16, Bellflower 2--Nguyet Tran swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, to lead Savanna to its first victory of the season. Teammate Madelyn Valdes also swept, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1, for the Rebels (1-2).

Tustin 14, Bolsa Grande 4--Marie Wang swept in singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, for host Tustin (4-0), which won all nine singles sets.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Troy 3, Magnolia 0--Anne Sand had 10 kills to lead Troy (1-1) in its 15-10, 15-7, 15-9 victory over Magnolia (1-2).

Fountain Valley 3, Santa Margarita 1--Host Santa Margarita, ranked 10th in the county, extended sixth-ranked Fountain Valley to four games before losing, 15-9, 15-5, 10-15, 15-7. Summer Altice had 15 kills for visiting Fountain Valley (2-0). Kiki Maroutsos had 14 kills for Santa Margarita (0-1).

Laguna Beach 3, Mater Dei 0--Liz Belloni had seven kills to lead No. 3 Laguna Beach, which won, 15-7, 15-6, 15-12. Laguna Beach (2-1) had 13 aces for the night against Mater Dei (1-1).

La Canada Pasadena Flintridge Prep 3, St. Margaret’s 1--Anne Bendush had 13 kills for St. Margaret’s, which lost, 5-15, 16-14, 11-15, 3-15. St. Margaret’s is 0-2.

In nonleague water polo:

Buena Park 12, Hacienda Heights Wilson 10--Wilson pulled within 11-10 on a goal by Eric Wurster with 1:10 remaining, but the Buena Park defense held and Chris Cornwell’s goal with five seconds remaining clinched the victory.

Jared Jones scored five goals to lead Buena Park (1-0) and teammate Adrian Vanciu scored all three of his goals in the second quarter to help the Coyotes score five in the quarter and take the lead at halftime, 6-4.

Canyon 15, Troy 8--Joe Bertocchini had six goals to lead Canyon (1-0) to a victory in its season opener. Teammates Brad Schaefer and Bob Russell scored five and four goals, respectively, for the Comanches.

Troy (1-1) remained within a goal at the end of the second quarter, but Canyon scored three goals in the third quarter for a 10-6 lead.

Goalie Eddie Colson had 11 saves for Canyon.

Costa Mesa 13, Trabuco Hills 6--Todd Hylton scored five goals and Jimmy Walters had four for visiting Costa Mesa (1-0), which led, 7-3, at halftime. Jayson Gatzke scored three goals and Jessica Gatzke had 14 saves for Trabuco Hills (0-1).

Fountain Valley 22, Los Amigos 3--Matt Pavich scored seven goals and Kiff Crandall had four for host Fountain Valley (1-0), which outscored Los Amigos (0-1), 10-0, in the second half.

La Verne Bonita 17, El Dorado 11--Alan Taylor had five goals for La Verne Bonita. Bonita scored seven goals in the second quarter. Kendall Benson scored five goals and Max Aquitar had four for El Dorado (1-1).
