Coaches Deliver Their Game Plan

Bump, set, time out!

Leslie Peterson, the girls’ volleyball coach at Simi Valley High, is due to deliver her first baby on Oct. 10.

One minor problem: Her team is scheduled to face cross-town rival Royal that night.

The diaper dilemma doesn’t end there. Peterson’s husband, Erik, coaches football at Glendale High.

His team is scheduled to play Bloomington that night.

However, the parents-to-be do have a plan. They’re coaches, after all.

She will have a cellular phone and he will wear a beeper.

If it goes off. . . .

“I’ve got to go,” said Erik, 30. “I’ll make a phone call to see if it’s a false alarm, but I’ll probably be [on my way].”

The Petersons have been taking Lamaze classes and things are expected to go smoothly. Even though this is their first child, Leslie’s coach has coaching experience.

“We said we didn’t want it to happen during coaching season, but things don’t always work out that way,” said Leslie, 29.

Their doctor is keeping the baby’s gender a surprise. They haven’t decided on a boy’s name, but a girl will be named Page.

“We just want it to be healthy,” Leslie said.
