No. 2 Titans Lose First in Men’s Soccer

Cal State Fullerton men’s soccer team, ranked second in the nation, lost its first game of the season Friday as Southern Methodist defeated the Titans, 3-1, in the 15th Fresno State Tournament.

Daniel Montoya scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead SMU.

Justin Stone scored on a pass from Montoya 34 minutes into the game and Daniel Hernandez took Montoya’s assist seven minutes later to put the Mustangs ahead 2-0.

Montoya rounded out the Mustangs’ scoring, taking a pass from Stefan Soufiane and scoring in the 47th minute.

Cal State Fullerton (4-1-1) scored its only goal in the 60th minute when Adam Black knocked in Joe DiGiamrino’s corner kick.

The tournament continues today with the Titans playing Fresno State. SMU faces Bowling Green, ranked 22nd in the nation.

In the Southern California men’s soccer classic:

Whittier 3, Concordia 1--Scott Manson gave Whittier a 1-0 lead, but Concordia tied the score on a Nathan Mercier goal 33 minutes into the consolation game. Manson put Whittier ahead for good with his second goal in the 37th minute.

Pacific Christian 2, Redlands 1--Pacific Christian advanced to today’s final against Cal State Stanislaus.

Donald Laing scored at the 10:23 mark on an assist from Oliver Street and Mark Campbell added an unassisted goal with about a minute left in the half. Redlands’ goal came on a penalty kick by Will Walker in the 67th minute.

Mark Wagner had two saves for Pacific Christian.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Hawaii Pacific 3, Southern California College 2--SCC (3-3) outshot Hawaii Pacific 17-8, but was unable to overcome an early three-goal deficit.

SCC got goals from Mike Ditta and Peter Schumerth and goalkeeper Jason Cozart recorded five saves.

In the Rhode Island Classic women’s volleyball tournament:

Long Beach State 3, Brown 0--Nique Crump had 13 kills in 17 attempts with only one error to lead Long Beach State (9-0) in the 15-5, 15-2, 15-2 victory. The 49ers, ranked seventh in the nation, have lost only one game in nine matches. They face Massachusetts and Rhode Island today.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Pomona Pitzer 3, Chapman 1--Heather Pilatio had 20 kills in the 14-12, 9-15, 15-4, 15-10 victory for Pomona Pitzer (5-4). Natalie Dixon had 39 assists and six aces.

Shawna Parkinson led Chapman (3-4) with 14 kills and five digs.
