Musick Tackles Santa Ynez, Helps Nordhoff Win, 14-6

Jim Musick made two critical tackles in a row to help the Nordhoff High football team hold off Santa Ynez with a last-minute goal-line stand as the Rangers hung on for a 14-6 victory over the Pirates in a nonleague game Friday at Nordhoff.

Santa Ynez tailback Jeff McClurg ran 14 yards and appeared headed to the end zone before Musick knocked him out of bounds at the Nordhoff four-yard line.

On first and goal at the four, McClurg tried again, and once more ran into Musick, who stopped him for no gain. McClurg was stopped short two more times by the Nordhoff defense before Riley Roberts overthrew Josh Groves on a fourth-down pass inside the three-yard line with 14 seconds left.

“This was the funnest experience I’ve ever had in football,” Musick said.

Russell Farrar rushed for 102 yards in 17 carries to lead Nordhoff, and Kevin Zielsdorf ran for 55 yards in 12 carries.

Nordhoff (2-0) finished with 237 yards of offense, far short of the region-leading 483 yards the Rangers had last week.

Nordhoff made two fumble recoveries, both in Ranger territory, and had two interceptions.
