King the Difference in Savanna Victory
Despite fumbling three times, running back Cameron King rushed for 109 yards and the game-winning score in Savanna’s 21-14 victory over La Habra Friday night.
“I’m glad the coaches had faith and kept putting me back in,” said King, who lost one of the three fumbles. “I kept thinking I was going to break a run, but they [La Habra defenders] kept knocking the ball loose.”
King’s five-yard run with 3 minutes 48 seconds left in the game gave Savanna (1-1) a 21-7 lead.
The score proved crucial because Sonora (0-2) answered with a 38-yard touchdown run by quarterback Ralph Fernandez, which cut the lead to 21-14 with 2:05 left in the game.
King, who had 21 carries, was the difference for Savanna.
“I fumbled last week [in a 30-15 loss to Kennedy] and it got me down,” he said.
Kennedy’s Jack Tucker ripped the ball out of King’s hands at the goal line and helped clinch the victory for the Fighting Irish.
Friday, King got plenty of support from teammate, Jason Brown, who gained 73-yards in 10 carries.
The Rebels didn’t get off to a good start as Sonora’s Eric Garlichs blocked a Peter Fernandez punt and recovered it in the end zone to give the Raiders a 7-0 lead with 6:56 left in the first quarter.
