SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

If there was any doubt about the resurgence of the West Los Angeles College football team, it was removed Saturday afternoon after a 37-23 victory over Glendale in a Western State Conference game at West L.A.

After suffering a heartbreaking 35-34 loss to highly regarded Valley in their opener, the unranked Oilers (1-1, 1-1) left little to chance.

They scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to break open a close game.

With two turnovers in the fourth quarter and numerous penalties, Glendale Coach John Cicuto said the Vaqueros (1-1, 0-1) had only themselves to blame.

The first turnover led directly to the go-ahead score. After linebacker Yharman Williams recovered a fumble by running back Rahsaan Williams at the Glendale 10, Romell Knutt ran for a touchdown on the next play.

Glendale, ranked 19th in the state, stumbled again on its next possession when a pass from quarterback Aryn Hart was intercepted by defensive back Tyrone Morse at the West L.A. 43.

“That is a good football team,” Cicuto said.

“We just can’t afford those kinds of mistakes against a team like that.”

Cicuto was impressed with the West L.A. offense, which outgained the Vaqueros, 418 yards to 337. Knutt ran for 116 yards and three touchdowns in 19 carries and wide receiver Kory Jones caught seven passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns, including a 95-yard pass play in the first quarter.

Ramone Archie led Glendale with 116 yards and a touchdown in 16 carries.
