CSUN Still Perfect in the Big Sky

Getty Dimitrova had 26 kills and Nacy Ma added 22 as the Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team defeated host Eastern Washington 12-15, 15-7, 11-15, 15-10, 15-7 Saturday to remain undefeated in Big Sky play.

Northridge (2-8, 2-0) trailed, two games to one, but hit .320 in each of the final two games. The Matadors held Eastern Washington (6-4, 1-1) to a .145 hitting percentage for the match.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

California 13, Pepperdine 8--Alex Rodriguez scored four points to spark a comeback by Pepperdine, but the Waves fell in a nonconference game at California.

Rodriguez, who had two one-point goals and one two-point goal, scored once in the second quarter as the Waves (2-4) rallied from a 3-1 first-quarter deficit to tie the score, 5-5. He also scored Pepperdine’s final goal.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor tournament--Carrie Swartz had 13 kills as Royal dropped best-of-three matches to Newport Harbor (15-6, 15-1) and Long Beach Poly (13-15, 15-12, 15-9).

Nikke Guerra had 12 kills and Maryl Mashburn added 31 assists for the Highlanders.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Ojai Invitational--Senior Chris Ramirez of Royal and junior Victor Ochoa of Nordhoff won the large- and small-school races in the non-scoring meet at Lake Casitas. Ramirez clocked 15 minutes 54 seconds over the three-mile course and Ochoa clocked 15:53.

Woodbridge Invitational--Hoover senior David Lopez won the Division II senior boys’ race with a time of 15 minutes 5 seconds, the second-fastest time of the morning races, behind Chris Farley of Sacramento Del Campo High (14:58).

In the Division II junior boys’ competition, Hoover’s Isabel Casillas and Jamal Balouch tied for fourth place with a time of 15:37.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Ojai Invitational--Robin Scott of Santa Barbara San Marcos won the large-schools race and Terrah Chapin of Nordhoff led the Rangers to a 1-2-4 finish in the small-schools event in the non-scoring meet at Lake Casitas.

MEN’S SOCCER

Westmont 4, Cal Lutheran 2--Ben Hook had two goals as the Warriors (5-1-1) took a 4-0 first-half lead and held on for a nonconference victory at Westmont.

Brian Collins scored two goals for the Kingsmen (3-2).

The Master’s 1, Biola 0--Timo Scheunemann scored from 18 yards in the 17th minute to lift the Mustangs (5-2-1) to a nonconference victory at The Master’s College.

Mustang goalkeeper Kris Bage had nine saves to record his third shutout.

Cal State Northridge 3, Texas Pan American 1--Luis Castro, Michael Preis and Federico Arroyo scored for the host Matadors (2-2-1) in a nonconference game. Adrian Ausucua scored for Texas Pan American (0-4).

Moorpark 1, Mt. San Antonio 0--Mike Sanders scored off an assist by Aaron Bettendorf to break a scoreless tie in the 58th minute of a nonconference game at Mt. San Antonio College.

Brian Pineau was in goal for Moorpark (2-0-1) in the second half and preserved the victory with six saves.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 2, La Verne 1--Holly Roepke scored with nine minutes to play in the second overtime to lift the Regals (5-1, 2-0 in league play) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at La Verne.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Former Thousand Oaks High runner Kim Mortensen finished first in the individual race of the San Diego State Invitational with a time of 17:15 Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego.

Mortensen, a UCLA freshman, paced the Bruins to a second-place finish with 40 points. Cal State Northridge finished fifth with 132.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

The Cal State Northridge men finished third out of seven teams in the San Diego State Invitational.

The Matadors had 63 points, behind UCLA (37) and 02 Debt Track Club (49). Javier Ramirez was fifth in the individual race with a time of 25:51.
