Lakers Give Harris Two-Year Extension

Share

The Lakers and Coach Del Harris have signed a two-year extension that will keep him under contract through the 1998-99 season, the team said Monday.

They had been discussing the new deal since spring but completion was delayed by the draft in late June, the pursuit of Shaquille O’Neal and other free agents in July and then vacations, always with the understanding that it would get done before training camp opens Oct. 4.

Harris would have been heading into the final season of the contract he signed when he was hired in May 1994.

Harris, the NBA’s coach of the year in 1994-95, has a 101-63 record in two seasons with the Lakers. Including stints with the Houston Rockets and Milwaukee Bucks, he is 433-404 and ranks eighth in victories among active coaches.
