Mater Dei Shuts Out Hawthorne

James Farley scored three first-half touchdowns, and Mater Dei’s defense kept opponents scoreless for the third consecutive game in a 47-0 victory over Hawthorne Friday night at Santa Ana Stadium.

Farley, who rushed for 119 yards in 16 carries, scored on runs of 12, 6 and 6 yards in the second quarter. Mater Dei (3-0) added a safety and a 64-yard kickoff return by Joey Boese to take a 30-0 halftime lead.

The Monarch defense held Hawthorne to 13 yards total offense and one first down in the first half. Hawthorne (1-2) gained 74 total yards and didn’t move into Mater Dei territory until there was a minute left in the game.

On Mater Dei’s first play of the second half, quarterback Nick Stremick completed a 47-yard scoring pass to David Castleton. Stremick passed for 183 yards, completing eight of 15 attempts before being replaced early in the fourth quarter.

Mater Dei kept on scoring in the third quarter. Keith Greiner kicked a 36-yard field goal, followed by a 26-yard touchdown run by Mike McNair with 25 seconds left in the third quarter.

Hawthorne quarterback Ray Rivera completed three passes on the game’s final drive to bring the Cougars to Mater Dei’s 34-yard line.

Hawthorne’s only chance to break the shutout ended when Rivera was sacked by Monarch linebacker Matt Porter on the final play of the game.
