Fullerton Heads Back to Its Roots

The Fullerton College football team is returning to its longtime home when the Hornets take on Cerritos in a Mission Conference game at 7 tonight at Fullerton District Stadium.

Fullerton used to play most of its home games on the field from the start of the program in 1916 until the middle of the 1994 season. That year the team started playing its home games at Cal State Fullerton’s stadium, which was in need of tenants after Cal State Fullerton dropped its football program.

But Cal State Fullerton wanted to raise the rent and Fullerton College’s athletic administration decided to return to the field across the street from the college in an effort to keep costs down.

Fullerton (0-1) began the season with a 44-31 loss to Long Beach on Sept. 14, then had a bye last week.

Cerritos (2-0) is trying to complete a three-game sweep of Orange County teams. The Falcons started the season with a 22-9 victory over Rancho Santiago then beat Golden West, 45-17, last week.

In other conference games:

El Camino (2-0) at Saddleback (2-0), 7 p.m.--Saddleback is ranked fourth in the nation by the J.C. Grid-Wire and El Camino is 12th. The game features talented defenses. Saddleback is giving up 242 yards per game and El Camino 296. El Camino is coming off a 26-0 victory over Palomar.

Golden West (0-2) at Long Beach (2-0), 7 p.m.--There are no breaks in the schedule for Golden West and first-year Coach Mike Shaughnessy. Long Beach, the J.C. Grid-Wire defending national champions, are 10th this season.

Mt. San Antonio (1-1) at Orange Coast (1-1), 7 p.m.--Mt. San Antonio has the best defense in the conference, giving up 210 yards per game, and Orange Coast has the worst, giving up 474. Chad Collins and John Frank have shared time at quarterback for OCC and Coach Bill Workman plans to continue with that scheme.
