23-Point Fourth Quarter Carries Canyon to Victory

Canyon scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to rally from a nine-point deficit and beat Corona del Mar, 33-19, Friday night at Newport Harbor High.

Karmon Tarkeshian led the Comanches’ late surge with two of his three touchdowns coming in the fourth quarter. The senior running back finished with 138 yards in 20 carries.

Corona del Mar kicker Matt Hoyt missed his second field goal of the game with 5:04 left in the third quarter and Canyon took over at their own 20.

The Comanches (3-0) marched down the field on a drive that lasted 14 plays and six and a half minutes. Tarkeshian ended the drive with a 13-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to, 19-17.

Corona del Mar (2-1) was stopped on its next possession and was forced to punt. The snap, however, went over the punter’s head and into the end zone. The punter threw the ball out of the end zone for a safety to it, 19-19.

On the free kick, Tarkeshian returned it 39 yards to the Sea Kings’ 32. Seven plays later, Jermaine Montgomery scored on a one-yard run.

Corona del Mar was led by quarterback Mike McClellan who threw for 184 yards and three touchdown passes, including two to wide receiver Ryan Cooper, who led the Sea Kings with seven catches for 95 yards.
