Cerritos Has Record Day at Fullerton’s Expense

From the first play to the last, the third quarter was a total disaster for Fullerton College Saturday night.

Cerritos scored 26 points in the quarter and rolled to a 67-27 victory over Fullerton in a Mission Conference football game at Fullerton District Stadium.

Cerritos’ 67 points is the second most in the program’s history. The point total was the most given up by Fullerton in the history of that program, which dates to 1916.

Cerritos had taken a 20-10 lead in the first half only to have Fullerton (0-2) rally to tie the score, 20-20. The final three points came on Chris Diaz’s career-best 49-yard field goal with three seconds left in the half. But that as the end of the highlights for the Hornets (0-2).

Cerritos (3-0) got the ball to start the third quarter and needed only four plays to move 55 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. It was scored by Michael Moody on a 12-yard run with 13 minutes 28 seconds left.

Corey Kelley then scored about five minutes later on a 12-yard sweep to put the Falcons up, 32-20.

After a pass by Fullerton quarterback Paul Waldrop was intercepted, Kelley eventually scored on a one-yard run with 3:35 left in the quarter. Kelley finished with 143 yards and three touchdowns in 18 carries.

He has rushed for 482 yards in Cerritos’ first three games, all victories over Orange County teams.

Kelley had the best overall game but the single most impressive run came from Moody.

He scored the final touchdown of the third quarter on a 35-yard run in which he started on a sweep to the left side then reversed his field, picked up a few blocks, and outran the exhausted Fullerton defense to the end zone. The drive started after Fullerton wide receiver Tony Scott fumbled after he appeared to already be down.

The quarter finally ended when Waldrop’s pass was intercepted.
