It’s No Riddle What Play Redell Likes to Run

Watch out for the ol’ fumblerooski.

The wacky deception play, in which an offensive lineman scoops up an intentional fumble and runs around end, worked again for St. Francis in a 35-28 victory over Alemany. Guard David Moore ran 75 yards for a touchdown to pull St. Francis even, 14-14, in the second quarter.

“We practice it every week,” St. Francis Coach Bill Redell said. “It’s a pretty big gamble. It’s all or nothing, but it’s kind of a momentum-changer.”

One would think St. Francis’ opponents would catch on. Since Redell became coach in 1993, the Golden Knights have scored on the play five times in seven tries.

Calling for a quarterback: A quarterback quandary might be brewing at Oxnard, where juniors Adrian Maciel and Joe Rivas are challenging senior Bryan Spencer for the starting job.

Rivas and Maciel, a transfer from Santa Clara, made their debuts in last week’s 48-0 victory over Channel Islands. Maciel threw a 29-yard touchdown pass.

“We want to see what they’re capable of,” Coach Wesley Morimune said of the back-ups. “As for experience, it’s Spencer. But he makes mistakes every once in a while.”

Spencer will start Friday night against visiting Buena in a Channel League opener.

More switches: Junior quarterback Ray Rodriguez has assumed the starting role at Chaminade, replacing senior Keith Mait, who has an injured hand. Mait will continue to start at free safety.

Bloodlines: Freshman Chris Covert, top runner for the Paraclete High boys’ cross-country team in the Bell-Jeff Invitational on Saturday, is the son of Antelope Valley College cross-country and track Coach Mark Covert.
