Anaheim’s Gomez Passes for 504 Yards

Luis Gomez, a senior quarterback at Anaheim, passed for 504 yards in a 51-27 nonleague victory over Cypress Friday night at Western High, breaking the Orange County single-game passing record.

“I give all the credit to my linemen and receivers,” said Gomez, who began the game with 773 yards passing.

Gomez completed 22 of 32 passes. He threw four touchdown passes--three covering at least 53 yards--and one pass was intercepted.

Mike Willes of Fullerton passed for 477 yards against San Bernardino in 1981 to set a record and Los Alamitos’ Sean Stein passed for 441 yards in a 45-22 victory over Loara last week.

“I was not aware that he was closing in on the record; I’m really happy for him,” said Anaheim Coach Allen Carter, whose team improved to 1-3. “We had some lucky catches tonight and some lucky breaks.”

Gomez’s leading receiver, Jesus Acevedo caught 13 passes for 287 yards, which puts him second on the all-time county list in receiving yardage. Acevedo, who caught a 56-yard touchdown pass, trails only Brian Fleming of Laguna Hills, who had 307 yards receiving against Santa Paula in 1987.

Gomez’s total is the third highest in Southern Section history, according to the section record book. Kevin Harden of Los Angeles Salesian is the all-time leader with 531 yards against Big Bear Lake Big Bear in 1982.
