Ansevin’s Goal Lifts the Eagles

Chris Ansevin scored the winning goal on a four-meter penalty shot with 12 seconds remaining to give Santa Margarita a 10-9 victory over Newport Harbor in a Sea View League water polo game Wednesday at Newport Harbor.

Ansevin and Brandon Joffe each scored three goals for the Eagles (9-5, 1-0), ranked ninth in the Southern Section Division I. The Eagles, led, 9-6, after three quarters.

Newport Harbor (6-7, 0-1), ranked 10th in Division I, scored three consecutive goals to tie it, 9-9, on a goal by Chas Leeper, late in the fourth quarter, but Ansevin’s goal ended the rally. John Ucciferi scored three goals and Matt Moreau added two for the Sailors.

In another Sea View League game:

Corona del Mar 7, Irvine 6 (OT)--Carter Weir, who had two goals in the game, scored the winner in overtime. Eric Birkenback of Irvine scored to send the game into overtime, 5-5. Corona del Mar is 6-7, 1-0.

In the Century League:

El Modena 11, Orange 10--With 30 seconds left in the game, El Modena goalie Thoby Archer blocked a breakaway shot from Paco Preciado to secure the victory for the Vanguards (4-2, 1-1). Jeff Taylor scored the go-ahead goal for El Modena earlier in the quarter.

Gavin Keeler scored four goals for the Vanguards. Tim Naylor scored six goals for Orange (0-1 in league).

Foothill 19, Canyon 4--Ryan Carroll and Kevin McKee each scored four goals in a victory for top-ranked Foothill (12-1, 1-0) in the league opener. Goalie Nick Ellis had 10 saves for Foothill.

Villa Park 23, Santa Ana Valley 6--Joey Pacelli scored seven goals for visiting Villa Park (15-3, 1-0), ranked second in the county.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 13, Loara 3--Kendall Benson scored four goals for host El Dorado (10-4, 1-0), ranked seventh in the county and fifth in Division II.

Katella 13, Cypress 11--After Cypress rallied to an 11-11 tie, Phil Wirthgen and Scott Shaddyeach scored their fourth goals in the final two minutes to clinch the victory for visiting Katella (8-6, 1-0).

Eric Sandvig scored two of his six goals in the fourth quarter for Cypress (4-4, 0-1), which scored five consecutive goals after trailing, 11-6.

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 11, Sunny Hills 7--Dave Ploog had four goals and Shane Whittall recorded 10 saves for host La Habra (10-6, 1-0).

In the Golden West League:

Westminster 11, Tustin 10--Danny Johnson scored his seventh goal, the game-winner, with 10 seconds remaining for visiting Westminster (6-3, 1-0). Mike Foley scored seven goals for Tustin (5-3), which scored three consecutive fourth-quarter goals to pull even, 10-10.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Estancia 13, Laguna Hills 7--Brad Wayman, who had eight goals, scored the first six goals for the host Eagles (5-6, 1-0), who broke open the game with a five-goal third quarter.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 18, Fountain Valley 9--Corby Jobst, Travi Vayssie, and Brian Mericle each scored four goals in a victory for Esperanza (10-3, 1-0). Teammate Chad Simendinger had five goals for Esperanza.

In Pacific Coast League boys’ cross-country:

Laguna Hills 23, University 35--Laguna Hills’s Tyler Schrock finished second with a time of 16:33 over three miles at Laguna Hills. Martin Brix of University finished first with a time of 16:07.

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 21, Woodbridge 38--Danny Lee won in 15:54 over three miles at O’Neill Regional Park for El Toro (2-1).

In Sea View League girls’ cross-country:

Woodbridge 27, El Toro 29--Becky Miske won in 19:29 over three miles at O’Neill Regional Park for El Toro (0-3).

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

El Dorado 12, Sunny Hills 6--Amanda Oldridge swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, to lead El Dorado (9-0). Sisters Anne and Brittany McMillan swept at No. 1 doubles for the fifth-ranked Golden Hawks, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1.

In Golden West League girls’ volleyball:

Ocean View 3, Rosary 0--Sara Pollaro had 10 kills in a victory for Ocean View, 15-8, 15-9, 15-6. The 10th-ranked Seahawks improve their record to 8-0, 1-0 in league.

In Orange League girls’ volleyball:

Valencia 3, Anaheim 0--Erin Dedic had 10 kills for visiting Valencia (7-0, 1-0), which won, 15-3, 15-5, 15-2, in a match that was postponed from Tuesday.
