Brea’s Rally Comes to Pass in 14-8 Victory

Mike Kalcevich, who did not complete a pass in the first half, completed all nine attempts, including two for touchdowns in the second half, to lead Brea Olinda to a come-from-behind, 14-8 nonleague victory over host El Dorado Saturday at Valencia High.

Kalcevich connected on a 56-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Esparza Guillermo to put the Wildcats ahead with 2 minutes 21 seconds left to play. Kalcevich’s pass to Scott Lieng was good for the two-point conversion.

El Dorado (0-5) was forced to pass to conserve time. El Dorado ran 11 plays in a 73-second span before being stopped at the Brea 35.

The Golden Hawks took advantage of a bad snap to take possession on the Brea 45 with 6:19 left in the first quarter. Runs by Steven Warfield and Jakle Ehlen set up the El Dorado touchdown, a five-yard run by Warfield.

Warfield also scored the two-point conversion to give the Golden Hawks an 8-0 lead.

Gene Rose prevented El Dorado from increasing the lead when he blocked a 34-yard field-goal try on the final play of the first half.

Kalcevich lofted a screen pass to Jesse Vargas, who completed a 20-yard scoring play in the second half. Ehlen intercepted the two-point conversion effort, and El Dorado maintained its lead with 7:03 left in the third quarter.

Warfield rushed 27 times for 153 yards and Ehlen had 68 yards in 15 carries for El Dorado.

Kalcevich was nine of 12 for 135 yards for Brea Olinda (2-3). Guillermo caught six for 111 yards.
