Unlike most tennis standouts, Sommer doesn’t have a private coach or a lot of experience playing in junior tournaments. It hasn’t held her back. Last week she improved her record to 35-1 by winning six sets, including three (6-2, 6-2, 6-1) in a 9-9 (75-74 in games) victory over previously unbeaten Garden Grove in a Garden Grove League match.

* Woodbridge, senior. Won eight of nine sets in victories over Corona del Mar and Santa Margarita and a loss to Palos Verdes Peninsula.
Allyson Marquand/Cross-Country
* University, sophomore. Had the fastest time of the day--17:39 for three miles--and won Division I race at Central Park Invitational.
Melissa Snow/Volleyball/Outside Hitter
* Newport Harbor, junior. Had 30 kills in the Sailors’ five-game victory over Irvine in a Sea View League match.
