Alvarado Resigns His Post as Westlake Soccer Coach

Share

Lalo Alvarado, who last season led Westlake High to its first Marmonte League boys’ soccer title of the 1990s, will not coach the Warriors this season.

Alvarado said the move, coupled with a reduction in coaching club teams and individuals, will allow him to spend more time with his 18-month-old daughter.

“We did really well at Westlake the last couple years but the commute killed me,” said Alvarado, who lives in Santa Paula. “It was difficult for me to run the program from so far away.”

Alvarado, an outreach counselor at a Santa Paula elementary school and a 1983 graduate of Santa Paula High, said he is not a candidate to replace former Cardinal soccer Coach Joe Magdaleno, who recently retired due to health problems.

CSUN player out for year: As expected, senior linebacker Teddy Mack of Cal State Northridge is out for the season.

Mack, who suffered three seizures on the morning of Sept. 15 and has not played since, was reexamined by doctors this week and was not given clearance to return this season, Coach Dave Baldwin said.

No cause of the seizures was determined.

Baldwin said there is a chance Mack could be granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA.

Happy Valentine: Becky Valentine has been hired as girls’ soccer coach at Glendale High.

Valentine, 43, is a graduate of Hoover High and Occidental College. She has coached junior varsity girls’ volleyball and softball at Hoover and varsity girls’ volleyball at La Canada and Keppel High in Alhambra.

Valentine, a physical education teacher at Glendale, also coached the Caltech women’s club soccer team from 1985-90.

Wait till next year: Cal State Northridge women’s soccer player Kristi Tynan, a junior transfer from El Camino College, will use a redshirt year this season, Matador Coach Brian Wiesner said.

Tynan started in Northridge’s opener Aug. 30 but has not played since she suffered a broken collarbone during practice Sept. 4.

Executive action: Matt Ellis, vice president and general manager of the Lancaster JetHawks, was named the California League executive of the year at a meeting of league officials in Ontario.

JetHawks in middle: The California League has switched from a two-division format to three divisions for the 1997 season, moving the JetHawks from the Southern Division to the new Central Division.
