Trabuco Hills Wins in Water Polo

Todd Valentine scored 15 seconds into sudden-death overtime to help unranked Trabuco Hills upset Capistrano Valley, ranked ninth in the county, 9-8, Thursday in a South Coast League water polo game.

Jason Gatzke, who scored four goals, assisted Valentine’s winning goal for the Mustangs. Trabuco Hills (9-9, 1-1 in league) led, 5-1, at halftime before Capistrano Valley (13-7, 1-1) rallied to send it to overtime.

Trabuco Hills trailed in the first overtime period, 8-7, until Garrett McSorley scored with 15 seconds remaining to send it into sudden death.

Paul Carham and Dan Pingree each scored two goals for Capistrano Valley, ranked sixth in Division I.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 20, Western 4--Brian Dougherty scored six goals for visiting Brea Olinda (10-3, 4-0), ranked fifth in Division VI.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 15, Aliso Niguel 10--Spencer Dornin scored seven goals for Laguna Beach (13-4, 2-0), ranked eighth in the county and third in Division II. Dallas Hitchcock scored five goals for Aliso Niguel (7-7, 0-2).

University 23, Laguna Hills 5--Andy Majit scored six goals for University (8-6, 1-1).

In a nonleague game:

Santa Margarita 16, Long Beach Millikan 8--Justin Kroeze scored four goals for Santa Margarita (11-5).

In Garden Grove League boys’ cross-country:

Garden Grove sweeps--Garden Grove’s James Sparks finished first in 15 minutes 50 seconds over three miles at Mile Square Park. The Argonauts beat Rancho Alamitos, 22-40, and beat La Quinta, 19-44.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran sweeps--Orange Lutheran, top-ranked in Division V, swept the top five positions at Ontario Christian. The Lancers (8-0) beat Whittier Christian, 15-46, and Ontario Christian didn’t record a score.

Matt Fisher finished first in 15:41 for Orange Lutheran.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 26, Valencia 29--Lutz Braun won in 17:23 over three miles at Carbon Canyon Park for Brea Olinda (3-0). Valencia’s Martin Corona finished second in 17:39.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Costa Mesa 24, University 34--Jaime Carrillo’s second-place finish in 15:33 on the three-mile course at Mason Park led visiting Costa Mesa (3-0), top-ranked in Division IV. University’s Martin Brix won in 15:28.

In Garden Grove League girls’ cross-country:

Rancho Alamitos sweeps--Berenice Carbajal won in 19:09 over three miles at Mile Square Park for Rancho Alamitos (3-0), which defeated Garden Grove, 17-40, and La Quinta, 15-50.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran wins two--Kristin Groncy finished first for Orange Lutheran (8-0), ranked No. 1 in Division V, with a time of 18:01 over three miles at Prado Regional Park. The Lancers defeated Whittier Christian and Ontario Christian by identical scores, 15-50.

University 16, Costa Mesa 46--Allyson Marquand won the three-mile race at Mason Park in 18:54 for host University (3-0), ranked seventh in the county and fourth in Division II.

In Sunset League field hockey:

Santiago 6, Westminster 0--Ivonne Monroy scored three goals for Santiago (9-4-2, 8-2-2), which didn’t give up a shot on goal.

La Verne Bonita 1, Edison 0--Bonita’s Lisa Beach shut out Edison with five saves to hand the Chargers their first loss of the season.

In Century League girls’ tennis:

Canyon 10, El Modena 8--Shannon Wilkins swept in singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for visiting Canyon (3-10, 3-1).

Villa Park 16, Orange 2--Katey Becker swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, for visiting Villa Park (9-2, 4-0), ranked fourth in the county.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 19, Katella 2--Melissa Liao swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, and teamed with Yetee Osunsanmi to win in doubles, 6-0, for fifth-ranked El Dorado (13-1, 6-0).

In the Olympic League:

Connelly 11, Calvary Chapel 7--Jennifer Morioka and Deena Chrys swept in doubles, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, for host Connelly (8-5, 5-0), which won all nine doubles sets.

In the Orange League:

Savanna 13, Magnolia 11--Lan Tran and Kim Nguyen of Savanna (8-5, 4-2) defeated Magnolia’s JoAnn Cabuhat and Jenny Cabuhat, 6-1, in the decisive set.

Capistrano Valley 12, Mission Viejo 6--Anna Chang swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, for Capistrano Valley (3-1 in league).

Dana Hills 18, Trabuco Hills 0--Christi Manning swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for host Dana Hills (10-2, 4-0), ranked sixth in the county and first in Division II.

Mater Dei 14, San Clemente 4--Melissa Esmero swept in singles for eighth-ranked Mater Dei (8-4, 3-1), 6-1, 6-2, 6-0.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 17, Fountain Valley 1--Freshman Ritchelle Quiambao swept in singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, for host Esperanza (6-7, 2-3).
