More AFI Candidates

While Martin Scorsese seems a likely and fitting choice for the AFI Life Achievement Award for 1997 (“Scorsese to Get AFI Life Award,” Oct. 10), my immediate reaction was why not these older equally deserving candidates? Elia Kazan (still untouchable for naming names in the early ‘50s), Marlon Brando (turned down his “Godfather” Oscar in 1973), Charlton Heston (too well known as a Republican and conservative) and Paul Newman (too independent for the Hollywood establishment) all have drawbacks.
Before they become unable to appear, or pass on, as did King Vidor and George Cukor before receiving their due, recognition should be granted to these giants, for what they created as much as who they are.
