Thousand Oaks’ Comeback Eclipses McCann, Agoura

Agoura High quarterback Ryan McCann threw four touchdown passes, but it wasn’t enough as running back Eleo Cuadra rushed for three touchdowns to lead Thousand Oaks to a 29-26 come-from-behind victory Friday night in a Marmonte League game at Thousand Oaks.

Cuadra rushed for 70 yards in 20 carries and had touchdown runs of three, eight and eight yards. His second eight-yard scoring run, on the first play of the fourth quarter, gave the Lancers the lead for good, 21-14. Thousand Oaks drove 65 yards in four plays, highlighted by a 50-yard run by quarterback Scott McEwan.

McCann, who completed 20 of 31 passes for 232 yards, found receiver Shayne Sobel for a 34-yard touchdown on the Chargers’ next possession, cutting their deficit to 21-20. A two-point conversion pass was completed but was stopped short of the end zone.

Sobel caught nine passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns.

Thousand Oaks running back Jud Southwell, playing with a heavily taped ankle because of a sprain, scored on a 24-yard run with 1 minute 42 seconds to play. Chance Redmond’s fumble recovery set up Southwell’s scoring run.

McCann’s fourth touchdown pass, to Sobel covering 11 yards, came on the game’s final play.

Agoura’s Jason Gordon, league’s leading rusher, ran for a game-high 136 yards in 23 carries.

Thousand Oaks receiver Barrett Grindle had three receptions for 94 yards. McEwan completed 11 of 19 passes for 219 yards, and he rushed for 57 yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, Agoura took the lead on an 11-yard pass from McCann to Marcus Helfman with 1:19 left in the second quarter.

Thousand Oaks (7-0-1, 5-0 in the league) responded when Cuadra scored on a three-yard run on the last play of the half, 7-7.

Agoura (4-4, 2-3) regained the lead, 14-7, when McCann completed a 21-yard scoring pass to Sobel in the third quarter. The drive was set up by a Ryan O’Corrigan fumble recovery.
