Westlake Makes Jump Over Harvard-Westlake

In a matchup of Southern Section girls’ tennis powers, Helena Horak and Erin Smith swept their singles matches to lead Westlake High to a 10-8 victory over Harvard-Westlake Friday at Harvard-Westlake.

Katy Smith, Erin’s twin sister, missed scoring her own singles sweep for the Warriors (14-3), who are ranked No. 3 in Division III, when Lindsy Forbess outlasted her in a half-hour tiebreaker. Forbess won the set, 7-6 (17-15).

Harvard-Westlake (12-6), ranked second in Division III, went 7-2 in doubles, including a sweep by Lori Markman and Chelsea Heller.

Simi Valley 13, La Reina 5--Mindy Gondrez swept her matches at No. 1 singles for the Pioneers (13-4) at Simi Valley.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Portland 4, Pepperdine 0--Freshman Jennifer Peterson had five of Pepperdine’s seven shots on goal, but the Waves (10-7-0, 3-2-0) were shut out by first-place Portland (13-0-2, 4-0-0) in a West Coast Conference game at Portland.

Ventura 2, Santa Barbara 1--Ana Baro’s goal in the 82nd minute lifted the Pirates (15-2, 10-1) to their ninth consecutive victory in a Western State Conference game at Santa Barbara.

MEN’S SOCCER

Mission 6, Oxnard 0--Luis Mesta scored three goals for the Free Spirit (7-4-5, 2-1-2), increasing his single-season school record to 24, in a Western State Conference game at Pierce College.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Stanford 9, Pepperdine 8--Brian Wallin converted a four-meter penalty shot with 2:21 remaining in the second sudden-death overtime period to lift No. 3-ranked Stanford (13-4, 4-1) over the Waves (5-11, 1-5) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Pepperdine.

Freshman Chris Tilden scored three goals in the final 2:27 of the fourth quarter to rally the Waves from an 8-5 deficit and send the game into overtime.

Ventura 20, Pierce 2--Rodrigo Fernandes scored five goals as the Monarchs (17-9-3) advanced to the semifinals of the Western State Conference championships at Ventura College.

The Monarchs, who clinched a spot in next week’s Southern California championships, play Cuesta at 10:30 a.m. today, with the winner advancing to the championship game at 3:30 p.m.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Burroughs 26, Bosco Tech 6--Alfonso Tucay scored a school-record 17 goals for the Indians (8-13, 3-2) in an Almont League game at Burroughs.

Tucay shattered his previous school single-game record of 11 goals, set last season. He has 143 goals this season, also a school record.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Louisville 18, Harvard-Westlake 46--Kelly Harrington ran the three-mile course in 18 minutes 49 seconds to beat teammate Mariel Holcomb by 1:06, as Louisville (6-1, 5-1) had the top two finishers in a Mission League meet at Pierce College.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Loyola 26, Notre Dame 29--Knights Mike Brose and Kevin Lelles finished second and third, respectively, but the Cubs (6-0 in the league) won the Mission League title at Elysian Park. Notre Dame is 5-1.
