In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 41, Bolsa Grande 21--Pacifica quarterback J.D. Stern threw for a school-record 354 yards and three touchdowns at Bolsa Grande.

The Mariners (6-3, 3-3) were still reeling from a 36-33 loss to Santiago last week that damaged their playoff hopes. And they were tied at halftime, 14-14.

“We were hoping to get off to a big start,” said Stern, who broke his school single-game passing record of 291 yards set last season. “We came out slow and with no intensity. But in the second half everybody stepped up on offense and on defense.”

Stern threw for 175 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown pass to Rusty White, in the first half. Pacifica outgained Bolsa Grande 302-41 after halftime.

On the second play of the third quarter, Stern connected with a wide-open Casey Huffmire on a 62-yard scoring play. It was the second touchdown of the night for Huffmire, who scored on a 43-yard punt return in the second quarter. Pacifica increased the lead to 28-14 as a 27-yard Stern-to-White pass set up a seven-yard Jeff Burt touchdown run.

Bolsa Grande narrowed the gap to 28-21 after Victor Alvarez returned an interception 56 yards to the Mariner two. Doug Baughman connected with John Nguyen on an 11-yard touchdown two plays later.
