Laguna Beach Stops Costa Mesa’s Water Polo Reign

Fourth-ranked Laguna Beach won its first outright Pacific Coast League water polo title with an 11-10 overtime victory over fifth-ranked Costa Mesa Thursday at Laguna Beach.

Grant McGann and Spencer Dornin each scored goals in overtime, and Evan Lutz had five during regulation to lead the Artists (20-4, 5-0 in league). Costa Mesa, which was shooting for a 11th consecutive league title, dropped to 18-7, 4-1.

In the South Coast League:

San Clemente 20, Dana Hills 3--Colin Shaughnessy scored five goals for eighth-ranked San Clemente (18-7, 5-0).

Mission Viejo 6, Trabuco Hills 5--Matt Feeney scored the game-winner with five seconds remaining for Mission Viejo (13-13, 3-2).

In nonleague water polo:

Cypress 10, Sonora 9 (OT)--Erik Sandvig scored nine consecutive goals, including the game-winner in overtime, for Cypress (11-10).

In the Garden Grove League boys’ cross-country finals:

Kennedy paces Santiago--Bob Kennedy won in 15:49 for Santiago on Mile Square Park’s three-mile course.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran wins--Robert Morgan won his second consecutive league title in 16:23 over the three-mile course at Irvine Regional Park for the Lancers.

In the Garden Grove League girls’ cross-country finals:

Young leads Pacifica--The first-place Mariners finished in the top four spots. Stacey Young won in 19:08 on Mile Square Park’s three-mile course.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran wins sixth straight--Kristin Groncy won in 19:14 on the three-mile course at Irvine Park, helping Orange Lutheran to its sixth consecutive league title.

In Century League girls’ volleyball:

El Modena 3, Villa Park 0--Meghan Coolbaugh had 15 kills for El Modena (15-1, 9-1), which won 15-6, 15-13, 15-12 to clinch its second consecutive league title.

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 3, Irvine 2--Sara Petry had 27 kills as Corona del Mar (6-12, 4-6) rallied to beat eighth-ranked Irvine (10-6, 6-4), 3-15, 9-15, 16-14, 15-13, 15-5.

Newport Harbor 3, Santa Margarita 0--Melissa Snow had 16 kills in the 15-12, 15-3, 15-12 victory for seventh-ranked Newport Harbor (14-4, 10-0). Sabrina King had 13 kills for No. 9 Santa Margarita (9-5, 7-3).

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 3, Esperanza 0--Larissa Carter had 12 kills and eight digs for top-ranked Fountain Valley (14-2, 9-1), which won, 15-3, 15-4, 15-8, to claim its first league title since 1993.
