Portland Too Much for Spurs

Isaiah Rider scored 23 points and Kenny Anderson added 17 and seven assists to lead the Trail Blazers past the injury-ravaged San Antonio Spurs, 94-81, Sunday at Portland.

The Spurs, without David Robinson and three other regulars, have lost three in a row and five of their first six games.

The Blazers went ahead after the game’s first 80 seconds but the Spurs stayed within striking distance until the final quarter.

Aaron McKie scored six points as Portland outscored the Spurs, 15-5, in the first 5:16 of the fourth quarter to go ahead, 86-67. McKie scored all eight of his points in the final quarter.

New York 101, Vancouver 82--Patrick Ewing had 21 points and 16 rebounds at Vancouver as the Knicks finished 3-0 on a West Coast trip.

The Knicks broke open a close game by scoring nine successive points during a three-minute stretch of the third quarter to lead, 76-62.

The Knicks increased the margin to 20 on a basket by Charles Oakley with seven minutes remaining, and they eventually led by as many as 24.

Charlie Ward added 13 points for the Knicks.

Cleveland 101, Denver 86--Danny Ferry came off the bench to score 20 points and the Cavaliers used an 18-0 fourth-quarter run to win at Cleveland.

The Cavaliers led, 79-69, with just under 10 minutes remaining when Terrell Brandon, who scored 19 points, started the Cavaliers’ streak. Brandon made a jump shot, a technical foul shot and a layup and fed Antonio Lang for a fast-break layup.

Vitaly Potapenko capped the run with a hook shot.
