Kilpatrick Victory Becomes Official

The Southern Section on Wednesday upheld Kilpatrick’s 22-17 victory over Maranatha in an Alpha League game that was stopped following a fight on Saturday. Maranatha will appeal to league officials.

Maranatha linebacker Terry Russo allegedly punched Kilpatrick Coach James Jackson late in the third quarter, triggering a five-minute melee. After consulting with coaches, officials stopped the game and declared Kilpatrick the winner.

The Southern Section asked Kilpatrick to review its game-management procedures and coaching staff. Players from both teams who participated in the altercation have been suspended.

No Parris yet: The Cal State Northridge basketball team is still without touted freshman Jeff Parris, whose eligibility is in question by the NCAA’s academic clearinghouse. The clearinghouse is investigating one of Parris’ courses at Long Beach Jordan High to determine if it meets the core curriculum standards.

Parris has not practiced in three weeks during the investigation. Northridge Coach Bobby Braswell is hoping for Parris to be cleared in time for the Nov. 23 opener at Nevada Las Vegas.

Honoring Isaac: Jim Isaac, a local high school sports official, died Wednesday morning after a lengthy bout with cancer.

Isaac, 55, officiated baseball, basketball, football, softball and volleyball for 11 years.

Members of the San Fernando Valley Officials Unit plan to honor Isaac with a moment of silence prior to Friday night’s high school football games.

Herrera hired: Wilson Herrera, 39, has been hired to coach the Granada Hills boys’ soccer team, replacing Tim Chamberlin, who resigned after last season.

As a player, Herrera helped the Wolves to three Valley Pac-8 Conference titles and the City Section title match in 1976. He was named the section’s most valuable player that year.

Playing hardball: The 14-and-under Southern California Stealth softball team, which won a national title in August, has moved to the next level.

Nine new players and six from the championship team make up the 16-and-under Black team, which has opened with six victories while outscoring opponents, 40-2.
