Westlake Wins in Shootout, 54-51

In a game that featured 105 points and 1,162 yards of offense, perhaps the biggest play was made on defense.

Joey Cuppari broke up Ryan McCann’s pass attempt to Shayne Sobel on fourth down at midfield with three minutes remaining to allow Westlake High to defeat Agoura, 54-51, in a Marmonte League game Friday nightat Westlake.

Trailing, 51-47, the Warriors (8-2, 5-2 in league) completed a seven-play, 66-yard drive, capped by a nine-yard scoring run by Jon Weems with 4:17 remaining.

Weems finished with 186 yards in 20 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also caught five passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

Agoura (5-5, 3-4) had a taken the lead on a three-yard run by Jason Gordon with eight minutes left.

Gordon finished with 131 yards in 18 carries and two touchdowns.

Westlake quarterback Casey Preston completed 20 of 32 passes for 424 yards and five touchdowns. Cuppari caught seven passes for 185 yards, including a 61-yard scoring reception.

McCann completed 18 of 28 passes for 401 yards and five touchdowns, including a 71-yard bomb strike to Marcus Helfman.
