Los Angeles police shot and wounded a 24-year-old man who allegedly wielded a knife at officers inside his Van Nuys house.

Officer Rodney Genter, 52, shot Adam Pilkenton Sunday night after finding the man inside a darkened house in the 5000 block of Fulton Avenue. Police said Pilkenton was waving a large kitchen knife above his head at the officers.

Pilkenton was struck once in the thigh and was taken to the L.A. County/USC Medical Center jail ward, where he was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

He was listed in fair condition.

Officers from the Van Nuys Division heard screams coming from the house when they arrived at 11 p.m. Sunday. When no one responded to their calls, Genter walked inside and found Pilkenton waving the knife, police said.

Around 3:30 p.m. the same day, police went to the house after Pilkenton’s father, John, complained that his son had fired shots from a shotgun. Police removed a shotgun but did not arrest Pilkenton then because he was not at the house, police said.
