SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Newport Harbor scored 29 consecutive points to defeat Anaheim, 29-6, in the Southern Section Division V playoffs.

The Sailors will play Foothill in the second round.

Anaheim (5-6) scored first on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Luis Gomez to Larry Clawson with 2 minutes 50 seconds left in the first half.

But the Sailor defense shut down the Colonists after that, holding them to 146 yards.

“Our defense saved us tonight,” Newport Harbor Coach Jeff Brinkley said. “[The defense] played very well.”

Greg Wertman, who had missed the last five games because of a leg injury, intercepted two of Gomez’s passes, one at the Newport Harbor one-yard line. The defensive line also kept the pressure on Gomez, sacking him six times.

Ray Ohrel, who rushed for 93 yards in 29 carries, put the Sailors on the board with 4:35 left in the first half, on a two-yard run around left end.

After forcing the Colonists to punt out of their end zone, the Sailors took over at the Anaheim 28-yard line. Five plays after dropping a pass in the end zone, Brad La Bass hung on to a six-yard touchdown pass from Josiah Fredriksen, giving the Sailors a 15-6 lead at halftime.

Fredriksen, who completed 10 of 20 passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns, connected with La Bass again, this time for a 67-yard touchdown, with 1:47 left in the third quarter.

Brett Baker scored the Sailors’ final touchdown on a 22-yard reception from Fredriksen.

Brinkley wasn’t satisfied with the team’s overall performance. “We didn’t play well on offense,” he said. “Penalties hurt us and it’s tough to get a rhythm going when we get first downs called back.”

The Sailors were penalized 12 times for 99 yards.
