May Helps the 49ers Get Past North Texas

Sophomore setter Misty May returned and had 49 assists and eight digs as Long Beach State defeated North Texas, 15-10, 15-9, 15-4, in the opening round of the Big West Conference volleyball tournament at UC Santa Barbara. May had missed five matches because of a partially torn posterior cruciate in her left knee.

The 49ers (29-1), ranked sixth in the nation, play UC Santa Barbara in the semifinals at 8 tonight.

Jenn Snyder had 21 kills for Long Beach. Teammate Michelle Jones had 13 kills and 10 digs for the 49ers.

In the Chapman men’s basketball tournament:

Chapman 101, Southwestern College 57--Norman Coulter had 16 points as Chapman won its second in a row. Wayemon Powell scored 14 points for Chapman (2-0).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Chapman 48, Pomona-Pitzer 41--Lyndsay Brown scored 10 points in a victory for Chapman (1-0) in the season opener.

Concordia 109, UC Santa Cruz 61--Angela Sather led Concordia (2-0) with 27 points and teammate Angela Good had 17 points in the victory.

UC Irvine 70, St. Mary’s 53--Leticia Oseguera led the Anteaters with 18 points and 15 rebounds.

Fresno State 66, Long Beach State 51--Adara Newidouski scored 15 points in the regular-season opener for Long Beach State (0-1).

Whittier 58, Pacific Christian 57--Whittier converted 13 of 50 three-point attempts in the victory.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo:

Pepperdine 10, Long Beach State 4--Brian Bowen had two goals for host Long Beach State (8-15, 0-8).

In nonconference water polo:

UC Irvine 13, UC Santa Barbara 8--Ryan Bailey scored five points for fifth-ranked UC Irvine (14-7).

In the Southern California Intercollegiate Men’s Tennis Championships:

Nick Varvais of UCI advances--Varvais defeated teammate Steve Tallakson, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. Earlier in the second round, Varvais swept Fernando Samoyoa of USC, 6-4, 6-3, and Tallakson upset Pepperdine’s Michael Jessup, ranked 25th in the nation, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

In the first round of doubles, UC Irvine’s Thomas Bohun and Andrew Cheney defeated Ross Duncan and Corey Guy of UC Santa Barbara, 8-6, and Steve Tallakson and Cameron Lindee defeated Freddie Hanser and Tim Radogna of Southern Methodist, 8-3.
