The Village Christian High football team will be out to even a score when plays Big Bear at 1 p.m. today in the Southern Section Division XI quarterfinals at Big Bear Middle School.

The Crusaders lost to Big Bear, 32-8, in a first-round playoff game last year.

Big Bear (10-1) is the top-seeded team in the division. Village Christian (9-2) has been rolling since Coach Mike Plaisance made sophomore David Romberger the starting tailback at midseason. Romberger has 1,111 yards.

Big Bear also features a high-powered running game with Brant Hall, who has rushed for 850 yards, and Ben Fieri, who has rushed for 595 yards.

Also at 1 p.m. today, Faith Baptist (10-1) plays at Riverside Christian (10-0) for the Southern Section Large Schools 8-Man Division football championship.

In girls’ volleyball tonight, Harvard-Westlake (20-3) continues defense of its state Division III title, playing host to San Luis Obispo (16-2) at 7 in a state quarterfinal.

In other state volleyball quarterfinals tonight, Westlake (20-3) plays at Santa Barbara (26-8) in a Division II match, and Flintridge Sacred Heart (16-4) plays at Bakersfield Garces (17-5) in a Division IV match.

College events in the region today include:

Men’s basketball: At 7:05 p.m., Cal State Northridge at Loyola Marymount. At 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., consolation games of Ventura tournament. At 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., semifinals of Ventura tournament.
