Explosive Device Found, Disabled on Aircraft Carrier in San Diego

Share

A Navy security guard on routine rounds found an explosive device in the living quarters of an aircraft carrier at a San Diego military base about 1 a.m. Saturday, a naval spokesman said.

Those in that area of the ship were evacuated and a disposal team disabled the device without incident, Lt. j.g. Charles Brown said.

The matter remains under investigation, and no arrests have been made, said Brown, who had no further details about the device.

The device was discovered on the Constellation, berthed in its home port of the U.S. Naval Air Station North Island. Brown said most of the ship’s port crew of 2,500 were probably not on board because it was the weekend, and the carrier was not evacuated.
