Western Baptist Beats Pacific Christian in Soccer Final

Chad Barkes scored three goals as Western Baptist (Ore.) defeated Pacific Christian, 6-2, to win the National Christian College Athletic Assn. men’s soccer title Saturday at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas.

Barkes scored twice in the first 28 minutes to give Western Baptist a 2-0 lead.

Thoreau Prendergast scored 10 minutes later for Pacific Christian (13-8-2).

A goal by Barkes and two by Aaron Lewis gave Western Baptist (18-5-1) a 5-1 lead with 35 minutes to play.

Prendergast scored Pacific Christian’s other goal.

Pacific Christian’s Donald Laing and Manuel Tapia were each named to the NCCAA All-American team. Tapia is a freshman from Westminster and Laing is a sophomore from Kingston, Jamaica.

Prendergast was an honorable-mention pick.

In the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo tournament:

UC Irvine 12, Long Beach State 5--Omar Amr and Ryan Bailey each scored three goals in a consolation victory for UC Irvine (15-8). Goalie Tom Davis had seven saves for the Anteaters.

UC Irvine plays UCLA at 11:30 a.m. today in the fifth-place game in Berkeley.

Long Beach State (9-18) plays Pepperdine at 10 a.m. in the seventh-place game.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Concordia 53, St. Thomas 50--Rick Haywood scored 18 points for Concordia (4-2).

In the UC Santa Barbara women’s basketball tournament:

UC Irvine 61, Delaware 45--Leticia Oseguera scored 17 points for UC Irvine. Sabrina Roberson and Megan Stafford each had 11 points for the Anteaters.

Jackie Porac scored 12 points for Delaware.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Chapman 79, La Verne 78 (OT)--Lindsay Foss led Chapman with 16 points.

George Fox 70, Southern California College 66 (2OT)--Elaine Whittemore led SCC (2-2) with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Pacific Christian 73, Mills 40--Nicole Kubota scored 18 points and Adrienne Penn scored 17 for Pacific Christian (3-5).

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, Kentucky 0--Nique Crump had 17 kills as Long Beach State defeated Kentucky, 15-7, 15-1, 15-11. Jenn Snyder had 15 kills and eight digs for the 49ers.

Misty May had 24 assists in two games for Long Beach State. Shawnee Hayes had 15 assists for the 49ers.
