Woodbridge Holds On for Victory

Krissy Duperron scored five points in the final five minutes, helping Woodbridge hold off San Clemente, 53-44, Wednesday in girls’ basketball pool play at the Woodbridge Tipoff Classic.
Duperron had 12 points, five after San Clemente cut a 16-point deficit to five, 39-34. Cathy Joens led Woodbridge with 15 points and Debby Caine scored 14.
San Clemente, which got 12 points from Kelley Kruger and 11 from Amanda Engle, made a run at the defending state champion despite 21 turnovers and nine missed layups.
In another tournament game:
Fountain Valley 68, Perris 52--Katie McCluskey and Kelly Boeke each scored 20 points for Fountain Valley (1-1).
In the Century tournament:
Century 68, Capistrano Valley Christian 18--Aprile Powell scored 24 points in a pool-play victory for tournament host Century (2-0).
Teammate Nikki Love scored 13 points. The Centurions held Capistrano Valley Christian (0-1) to only six points in the second half.
El Toro 55, Troy 52--Giuliana Mendiola took an inbounds pass with six seconds remaining, dribbled the length of the court and hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give El Toro (1-0) the victory.
Santa Ana Valley 45, Sunny Hills 31--After being down, 6-1, at the end of the first quarter, Santa Ana Valley outscored host Sunny Hills (0-1) 16-2. The Falcons are 1-0.
Sonora 34, Orange 30--Sarah Fister scored 17 points in a victory for Sonora (1-1). Lillian Hewko had 12 points for the Raiders.
In the Fullerton Invitational:
Katella 77, Magnolia 35--Diandra Jay made five three-pointers and scored 19 points in a pool-play victory for Katella (2-0).
Teammate Lynn Kaneshiro scored 12 points and had nine assists.
Stacey Tewell scored 19 points for Magnolia.
Whittier La Serna 55, Santiago 47--Stacey Trujillo scored 19 points and made six three-pointers for Santiago (1-2).
Trujillo has made 15 three-pointers in Santiago’s last two games.
Darlene Nunez scored 14 points for Whittier La Serna (1-0).
In the Irvine Invitational tournament:
Irvine 59, La Mirada 26--Sonja Dahlman led the Vaqueros (1-0) with 15 points. Brandy Marcus had 12 points and eight assists in the first-round victory.
Pacifica 57, Foothill 47--Heather Green scored 22 points for Pacifica (1-0), which will play Cerritos Gahr in the semifinals Friday.
Saddleback 43, Compton Centennial 23--Elisa Hernandez led Saddleback (1-0) with 14 points. Mayra Toscano had 10 points and eight steals in the first-round victory.
In the Los Angeles Washington tournament:
L.A. Washington 67, Los Alamitos 40--Los Alamitos committed 19 turnovers during the first half of the championship game and fell to the top-ranked team in City Section Division 4-A.
Kristin Geoffrey scored 12 points to lead the Griffins (2-1).
In the Lakewood Mayfair tournament:
Estancia 51, Manhattan Beach Mira Costa 25--Jill Black scored 16 points in a first-round victory for Estancia (2-0).
Foothill 79, Lakewood Mayfair 69--Rashad Sager scored 22 points to lead Foothill (2-0).
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
Esperanza 50, El Dorado 39--Leah Combs scored 15 points and had eight rebounds for Esperanza (1-0). Jamie Nebeker scored 12 points for El Dorado (0-1).
Fairmont 56, Rolling Hills Prep 24--Katy Barstow had 21 points, including 11 rebounds. AnchalSaigal added 13 for Fairmont (1-0).
Marina 64, Valencia 14--Natalie Nakase led Marina (1-0) with 12 points.
