Chapman Tops Cal Baptist in Tournament

Derek Mitchell made six of 12 three-point attempts and finished with 18 points to help Chapman to a 100-80 victory over California Baptist Friday in the first round of the Redlands men’s basketball tournament.

Chapman’s Toby Curto made 10 of 19 from the field and finished with a game-high 21 points. Corey Klinke had 13 and Darren Crooks 10 for Chapman, which led, 53-31, at the half.

Chapman shot 47% (39 of 83) from the field and made 12 of 25 three-point shots.

Wayemon Powell had nine points and seven assists for Chapman.

In the Air Force Classic women’s basketball tournament:

Wyoming 57, Cal State Fullerton 56--Dee Braxton led the Titans with 12 points and 10 rebounds, but the Titans (3-1), who led at the half 31-27, fell short down the stretch.

With three seconds left and the Titans down by one, Wyoming’s (4-2) Chrissy Ingalls missed the front end of a one and one. The rebound was grabbed by Cal State Fullerton and Titan point guard Andrea Thieme’s shot at the buzzer was good but was ruled too late.

In the Speedo Cup:

Etter beats Beard--UCLA’s Lindsay Etter earned an NCAA qualifying bid with her victory in the 100 breaststroke, finishing just ahead of Olympian Amanda Beard in 1:02.22 at Belmont Plaza. Beard finished in 1:02.94. The UCLA women’s swim team took a commanding lead after Day 2, ending the night with 1106 points. California is in second place with 784.

On the men’s side, Stanford remained on top with a score of 1298.5, more than doubling the score of Brigham Young in second place with 519.5.
