Kelly Carries A.V. Past Canyon

Le’Tre Kelly scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and earned all-tournament honors as Antelope Valley High beat Canyon, 52-42, Saturday night in the championship game of the Saugus tournament.

Zaire Williams added 16 points and Marc Buckner, the tournament most valuable player, had five points and seven assists for the Antelopes, the third-ranked team in The Times’ regional poll. Buckner averaged 14 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists during the tournament.

The Antelopes (4-1) used a fast-break attack and ball-hawking defense to build an early lead, forcing Canyon into 11 first-half turnovers.

“We did a good job of getting the lead and then getting them out of their zone defense,” said Antelope Valley Coach Tom Mahan. “We used up a lot of time in the second half with our perimeter passing.”

Playing without guard Tony Walker, who was sidelined with a shoulder injury, Antelope Valley had a 25-24 halftime lead. The Antelopes opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run and maintained the lead for the rest of the game.

All-tournamnet selection Steve Eernisse kept the Cowboys close, finishing with 20 points and five rebounds before fouling out with 38 seconds to play.

Jerreme Suarez scored 11 points for Canyon (3-1) and Justin Orefice added seven points with eight assists.

Williams was also named to the all-tournament team.

Valencia 75, Highland 72--Center Jerrohn Jordan, also an all-tournament pick, scored 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as the Vikings (3-1) took third place.

Norman Floyd led the Bulldgos (2-2) with 25 points and Wendell Bonner added 12.

Valencia’s Jason Richardson scored 15 points and added six steals and seven assists. Kevin Woods had 13 points for the Vikings.

Oxnard 64, Quartz Hill 47--Forward Jeff Fouchey scored 21 points and Damian Tafoya added 16 for the Yellowjackets (2-1) in the fifth-place game.

Forward Shawn Lett led Quartz Hill (1-2) with 17 points and Chris Hebert added eight for the Rebels.

Victor Valley 57, San Fernando 53--Center Tyrone Purnell scored 23 points and blocked seven shots for the Tigers (0-3) in the seventh-place game.

Sophomore Reggie Kinlaw added 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for San Fernando.

La Canada 63, Saugus 49--Matt Moore scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Spartans (2-1), who took ninth place. Mike Riddell added 18 points, all on three-pointers.
