Jones Leads Sonora Past Woodbridge

Ben Jones scored 30 points, including 12 on three-pointers, as Sonora defeated Woodbridge, 83-70, in the championship game of the National Sports Grill boy’s basketball tournament Saturday at Cypress High.

The Raiders (4-0) led, 41-25, at the half and by as many as 18 in the third quarter before Woodbridge pulled as close as five in the fourth quarter. Jeff Berokoff, who had 17 points, then made seven of eight free throws to preserve Sonora’s victory.

Chris Burgess had 22 points for Woodbridge (3-1).

In the Brea Backyard Bash:

Calvary Chapel 71, Brea Olinda 61--Kevin Falconer led Calvary Chapel (4-0) with 24 points in the championship victory. Falconer was named tournament most valuable player.

In the Daily Pilot tournament:

Los Alamitos 69, Torrance West Torrance 53--Los Alamitos outscored West Torrance, 23-11, in the fourth quarter to win the championship of the Daily Pilot Tip-Off Classic. Adam Seaton scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds for the Griffins (4-0).

Matt Komer scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds for Los Alamitos.

In the San Luis Obispo tournament:

Villa Park 66, Santa Margarita 36--Alex Will hit two three-pointers to open the second quarter and then Eric Chenowith hit a third as the Spartans outscored Santa Margarita, 18-4, to go up by 13 at halftime in the championship game.

Chenowith led Villa Park (4-0) with 24 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocks.

In the Carson City (Nev.) girls’ basketball tournament:

Marina 61, Carson City (Nev.) 56--Natalie Nakase and Marisa Emde scored 15 points each and Chanda McLeod had 14 points and 13 rebounds for Marina (4-0), which won the tournament for the third consecutive time.

In the Century tournament:

El Toro 59, Century 46--Freshman Guiliana Mendiola scored 18 points and sophomore Giocondo Mendiola had 17 to lead El Toro (4-0) to the championship victory.

In the Lakewood Mayfair Tournament:

Cerritos Valley Christian 58, Ocean View 54--Tracy Lindquist led Ocean View (3-1), scoring 21 of her 23 points from three-point range in the championship loss. Tracy Lindquist, Jennifer Tuiolosega, and Anna Lemvke of Ocean View were named to the all-tournament team.

In the Fullerton Tournament:

Rosary 48, Loara 46--Sarah Belavic led Rosary (4-0), scoring 13 points in the championship victory. Maggie Barnett had 12 points and six steals in the victory.

In the Irvine girls’ basketball tournament:

Pacifica 51, Irvine 47--With 10 seconds left, Janet Mackin made a free throw to put Pacifica (3-0) up by four points and clinch the championship. Heather Green, tournament MVP, scored 20 points to lead the Mariners. Pacifica’s Jaymee Pendergase and Mindyn McCurdy also were named to All-Tournament team.

Jami Allred, who scored 14 points in the loss, was named to the all-tournament team from Irvine (2-1) along with teammate Sonja Dahlman, who scored six points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

In the Irvine girls’ water polo tournament:

Irvine 13, Santa Margarita 3--Irvine (4-0), the No. 2 team in the county, defeated Santa Margarita (3-1), the No. 5 team in the county, in the championship game of the Irvine Tournament. Erin Lezak and Lana Kraus each scored three goals. Katie Ferguson, named MVP of the tournament, scored three goals for Santa Margarita. She scored 22 goals in the tournament.
