Potkey Steals Victory From Alemany, 45-43
Rhiannon Potkey’s layup with three seconds left gave Ventura High a 45-43 victory over Alemany on Wednesday night in a pool-play game of the Buena girls’ basketball tournament.
Potkey’s basket came after she stole a pass intended for Alemany’s Francine Bennette and broke the fifth tie of the fourth quarter.
Heather Clark had nine points for Ventura (1-0) and Potkey added eight.
Kelli Kobayashi scored 17 points for Alemany (0-2).
Buena 81, Santa Clara 27--Nicole Greathouse had 25 points and 15 rebounds and the Bulldogs (1-0) cruised in their tournament.
Hart 52, Newbury Park 32--Melissa Harrison had 19 points and eight rebounds for the Indians (2-0) in the Buena tournament.
Malia Kimball scored 13 points for the Panthers (0-1).
Bell-Jeff 76, Royal 48--Jaclyn Johnson had a career-high 40 points and 22 rebounds for the Guards (2-1) in the Rio Mesa tournament.
El Camino Real 65, Chaminade 42--Sophomore Cara Blumfield had 37 points, including 19 in the second quarter, and six assists for the Conquistadores (3-0) at El Camino Real.
Aja Diamond added eight points, 11 assists and six steals.
Grant 54, Cleveland 49--Nakeisha Perkins had 25 points and tied a school record with 24 rebounds for Grant (2-1) at Cleveland (1-4).
Harvard-Westlake 57, Burbank 31--Brooke Porter had 17 points and seven assists for the Wolverines (4-1) at Burbank.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Ventura 67, Hamilton 64--Christian Gallagher scored 22 points and the Cougars posted a come-from-behind victory in the Beverly Hills tournament.
The Cougars (1-0) trailed, 46-34, but scored 33 points in the fourth quarter.
Hart 68, Los Angeles 56--Cory Johnson had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Indians (4-1) in the Beverly Hills tournament.
Taft 51, San Marcos 39--Amir Bar-Netzer scored 14 points for Taft in the Westlake tournament.
Royal 52, Marshall 29--Ryan Nielsen had 21 points and Nick Flanagan added 16 for the Highlanders (4-2) in the Westlake tournament.
Hollywood 80, Westlake 68--Vahe Melikyan scored 33 points and the Shieks (3-1) reached the semifinals of the Westlake tournament.
Tony Barbi had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors (4-1). Leading scorer Jake Stewart did not play because of a sprained ankle.
Moorpark 64, North Hollywood 51--Andrew Carlson had 18 points for the Musketeers (3-1) in the quarterfinals of the Faith Baptist tournament.
Granada Hills 84, Sylmar 68--Leon Pimky scored 19 points for the host Highlanders (2-3).
San Pedro 58, Monroe 53--Mark Cambuss had 32 points, but the Vikings (0-4) fell at San Pedro.
Channel Islands 97, Malibu 45--Bernabe Simon had 31 of his 35 points in the first half for the Raiders (4-0) in the Channel Islands tournament.
Oxnard 67, Shalhevet 33--Sophomore Jacob Rogers scored 12 points for the Yellowjackets (3-1) in the Channel Islands tournament.
Hueneme 53, Pacific Coast Christian 52--Freshman Franklin Thompson sank two free throws with 11 seconds left to lift the Vikings (2-2).
Viewpoint 78, Milken 70--Greg Weiss scored 19 of his 26 points after regulation as the Patriots (3-3) won in three overtimes.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Antelope Valley 1, Paraclete 0--Mike Seward scored in the first half on an assist from Ian Palmer for the Antelopes (1-2-1).
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Ventura 92, Glendale 86--Eddie Miller scored 22 points for the Pirates (8-3) in a Western State Conference opener at Glendale.
