Harvey Named Player of Year

Running back Marcus Harvey of Valley College was named player of the year in the Western State Conference Southern Division.

Harvey led the WSC with 1,098 yards rushing and scored 19 touchdowns.

He set a Valley career rushing record with 2,262 yards, including two bowl games.

Harvey was also named to the team as a kick returner.

Jermaine Brooks of Pierce was named All-Northern Division wide receiver and second-team kick returner, and Tim Wolleck of Moorpark was chosen Southern Division kicker and punter.

Nation’s finest: Pat Fitzgerald, senior tight end for Texas, was selected All-American by the Associated Press. Fitzgerald played at Agoura High and Valley College.

Top 10 List: Ten players from high schools in the region were recognized on the Southern Section girls’ volleyball all-star teams. They were: Outside hitter Lauren McCartin of Saugus; opposite hitter Courtney Miller, setter Brooke Rundle and outside hitter Heather Hutchison of Westlake; swing hitter Christine Bohle, middle blocker Malaika Naulls and middle blocker Michelle Wong of Harvard-Westlake; middle blocker Holly Doran and outside hitter Danielle Dal Ponte of Flintridge Sacred Heart; and Alyssa Hain of La Reina.

Doran was selected player of the year in Division IV. Flintridge Sacred Heart’s Nancy Young was the division’s coach of the year.

Hartland: Hart senior quarterback Travis Carroll was named offensive player of the year and Hart senior linebacker Todd Hourigan was chosen defensive player of the year in the Foothill League.

Eight other players from league-champion Hart (9-3) received all-league honors.

Burroughs senior J.K. Scott, who passed for 3,013 yards and 32 touchdowns, was named all-league quarterback. Carroll passed for 2,780 yards and 27 touchdowns.

Foothill League coaches opted for only one running back on the first team, Canyon’s Jeff McKinley, while selecting five receivers.

Valencia senior running back Donavan Calhoun, who rushed for 1,127 yards and 14 touchdowns in an injury-plagued season, was a second-team selection.

Pro of choice: Mark Wipf, head professional at Buenaventura Golf Course, has been recognized golf professional of the year by the Southern California PGA, Northern Section.

Marc Cummins of the Ojai Valley Inn was named assistant professional of the year.

All-American girl: Sarah Rameson of Biola has been selected to the NAIA women’s volleyball All-American team.

Rameson, a senior outside hitter from Northridge, made the All-American team in 1993 and was a second-team selection in 1994.

She suffered a season-ending knee injury midway through last season.

Conference call: The Glendale College men’s soccer team, which finished second in the Western State Conference and qualified for the state playoffs, placed Eduardo Rodriguez, Aris Asatourian, Jaime Tobar and Juan Zuniga on the all-conference team.

Joe Agoston of Glendale was coach of the year.
