Mangan Promoted by Camarillo

Miki Mangan has been hired as coach of the Camarillo High softball team.

Mangan, a former Camarillo player, was an assistant last season to Nichole Victoria, who resigned after a single season to take an assistant coaching position at Oregon State.

The Scorpions (23-3-1) were runner-up to Mater Dei in the Southern Section Division I championship last season.

Mangan, 22, one of the area’s youngest softball coaches, played for Coach Darwin Tolzin at Camarillo and helped the Scorpions win the Division 5-A championship title in 1991.

The aggressive catcher graduated from Camarillo in 1992 and earned a scholarship at Cal State Fullerton. However, she played only one season for the Titans.

Thumbs up: The professional debut of U.S. Olympic boxer Fernando Vargas of Oxnard has been rescheduled for March 7 at the Oxnard Performing Arts Center.

Vargas, 19, who fell short in his bid for a gold medal at the Atlanta Olympic Games, is recovering from surgery in October to repair torn ligaments in his left thumb.

Vargas in August signed a four-year promotional contract with Main Events Productions and was scheduled to make his pro debut in his hometown in November.

Vargas’ debut will be televised on ESPN, a Main Events spokesman said.

Matador leaves: Freshman Jeremiah Nesbitt, a walk-on forward from Westlake High, has left the Cal State Northridge basketball team.

Nesbitt, who has not been able to play since spraining his right medial collateral ligament in the first week of practice, could rejoin the Matadors next season, Coach Bobby Braswell said.

Colorado-bound: Hart tackle Mike Wambolt has made a commitment to Colorado. The 6-foot-4, 280-pound senior canceled recruiting trips to Virginia Tech, Washington, Oregon and UCLA. He also turned down Iowa.

“My plan was to take all my trips and go from there,” Wambolt said.

“But it felt right, and so I did it.”
