Romines Is Second Team All-American

David Romines of Cal State Northridge was named to the Associated Press Division I-AA All-American second team. He was the only Northridge player selected on any of the three AP teams or the American Football Coaches Association team.

Romines, a senior from Simi Valley, led Division I-AA with 8.7 receptions per game and finished second with 130 receiving yards per game. He holds the Northridge records for catches, yards and touchdowns in a single season and a career.

Joe Douglass (82 catches, 1,469 yards) of Montana, Randy Moss (55-1,073) of Marshall and Dedric Ward of Northern Iowa (48-1,169) made the AP first team.

Iacenda makes plea: USC freshman running back Ted Iacenda entered a plea of not guilty to rape charges during an arraignment Wednesday in Las Vegas, according to a Clark County District Court clerk.

The former Hart High standout has been charged with one count of sexual assault for allegedly having intercourse with a 17-year-old girl against her will July 7 in a Las Vegas hotel.

A trial date has been set for June 23, 1997.

Star wars: The High Desert Football Coaches Assn., based in the Antelope Valley, is planning the first High Desert all-star football game in May at Palmdale High.

The contest will feature top senior players from the west side of the Antelope Valley Freeway against those from the east. The Palmdale Parks and Recreation department is expected to be the primary sponsor.

“We’ve agreed in principle but we need to work out some details,” said Littlerock Coach Jim Bauer, secretary-treasurer of the association.

On the move: Kendall Blackburn, who spent the last two seasons as Cal State Northridge’s defensive line coach, has been hired as an assistant at New Mexico State, according to a source in New Mexico.

Blackburn and Tony Samuels, the Aggies’ new coach, coached together on the staff at Nebraska.

It’s academic: Simi Valley soccer forward Mustafa Sarwari is academically ineligible, Pioneer Coach Rob Looyen said.

Sarwari, a junior, could return for the playoffs shortly after the grading period ends in February.

Cherry’s pick: Center Beau Cherry, a two-year starter on the Valley College football team, has made a commitment to Eastern Michigan.

Cherry, from Saugus High, was an All-Western State Conference Southern Division selection.
