Burgess’ 41 Points Spark No. 3 Woodbridge Past Dana Hills

Chris Burgess scored 41 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead third-ranked Woodbridge past eighth-ranked Dana Hills, 79-62, in the semifinals of the Irvine World News boys’ basketball tournament Wednesday at Woodbridge.

Brandon Beeson had 19 points and William Stovall 16 for the Warriors (6-2), who advanced to play University on Friday.

Huber Souza scored 28 points and Todd Pittman added 15 for Dana Hills (6-2).

In other second-round games:

Capistrano Valley 70, Estancia 62--Ryan Thurlow scored 21 points for Capistrano Valley (3-3), which led by 17 after three quarters.

Dan Galvanoni scored 15 points and Austin Moherman added 13 for Capistrano Valley, which will play Irvine in the semifinals.

Selwyn Mansell scored 28 points for Estancia (6-2).

Irvine 56, Palos Verdes Chadwick 43--Senior Scott Hansen scored 15 points and Gregg Schneider added 12 for host Irvine (5-3), which made 16 of 17 free throws and broke open a close game with a 20-point fourth quarter.

Drew Roddan scored 19 points for Chadwick (3-4).

University 85, Pomona 81--University rallied from a 39-34 halftime deficit, outscoring Pomona, 32-24, in the fourth quarter.

Eric Palmer led University (5-3) with 21 points and Nima Adloo added 20.

In consolation games:

Huntington Beach 60, Sunny Hills 52--Chris Basich scored 23 points and Nick Sinclair had 13 for Huntington Beach (5-2), which led by six at halftime.

Kennedy 53, Fountain Valley 31--Mike Kao scored 10 points for Kennedy, which took control by outscoring Fountain Valley, 14-0, in the third quarter. Ben Rogers scored 13 points for Fountain Valley.

In the Gary Raya Coed Classic:

Aliso Niguel 71, Valencia 64--Jeff Munsell scored 27 points and Yousef Etemadi had 22 for Aliso Niguel (6-3) in a pool-play game. Richard Reynoza scored 18 to lead Valencia (4-3).

Fullerton 46, Corona 43--David Brookman scored 20 points to lead Fullerton (5-2) in a second-round game. Kris Tengberg matched Brookman, scoring 20 for Corona (1-7).

In the Glendora Tournament:

Brea Olinda 69, Etiwanda 61--Sean Wink scored 23 points and Chris McMillian had 22 points and seven assists to help Brea Olinda (5-2), ranked eighth in the county, advance to Friday’s semifinals.

Jason Skirfvars had a game-high 17 rebounds and added eight points for the Wildcats.

In the Murrieta Valley Tournament:

San Clemente 59, Fallbrook 49--Jan Tatala scored 16 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and handed out five assists for San Clemente (5-2), which advanced to the Friday’s semifinal game against Upland.

Joe Tatala added 13 points and six rebounds and Semaj Johnson also scored 13 points for the Tritons.

In second round of the Sonora Tournament:

Tustin 58, Loara 47--Ryan Earl made three three-pointers in the opening quarter and finished with a game-high 20 points to lift Tustin (5-2) into the semifinals.

Earl added eight points in the third quarter as the Knights built a 21-point lead.

Sonora 71, Century 48--Ben Jones had 15 points and 14 rebounds and Jimmy Landry added 16 points for Sonora (7-0), ranked second in the county. Sonora advanced to play Westminster in the semifinals Friday.

Ricky Lopez scored 13 points for Century (4-4).

Westminster 58, Long Beach Millikan 43--Brandon Fox scored 15 of his game-high 20 points in the first half, including nine in the second quarter when Westminster outscored Long Beach Millikan, 22-11, to take a 11-point halftime lead.

Ly Nguyen added 12 points for the Lions (5-2), who advanced to the semifinals.

Whittier La Serna 77, El Toro 73--La Serna’s come-from-behind victory spoiled a great shooting effort by El Toro sophomore Mark Wulfemeyer.

Wulfemeyer made 11 of 13 shots, including five of six from beyond the three-point arc, and finished with a game-high 30 points.

However, the Chargers lost a six-point lead to start the fourth quarter and Millikan made several free throws down the stretch to advance to Friday’s semifinal game against Tustin.

Fabrizio Mendiola scored 18 points for El Toro (7-1).

In the Troy Tournament:

Troy 67, Cerritos Valley Christian 37--David Sun scored 24 points and Jerry Inzunza added 17 points and eight steals to lead Troy (4-4).

In the Riverside La Sierra Academy Tournament:

Orangewood Academy 61, La Sierra Academy 56--Nick Olsen and Oliver Karsten each scored 18 points for Orangewood (5-1) to advance to the final.

In nonleague games:

Cypress 49, Western 33--Chris Heil scored 16 points, Wes Bunn added 14 and Travis Weaver scored 12 on four three-pointers for Cypress (4-2). Jahan Rana led Western (2-7) with 11 points.

Garden Grove 63, Magnolia 62--Eric Kenneth and Brian Caraby each scored 12 points to lead Garden Grove. Garden Grove took a 31-29 halftime lead and held on for the victory. Zamiro Bennem scored a game-high 20 points for Magnolia and teammate Art Garland added 18 points.

Katella 87, Anaheim 70--Joe Barraza and Kenny Moreno scored 25 points each to lead Katella (6-3), which led, 42-23, at halftime.

Laguna Hills 70, Trabuco Hills 55--Jerone Lewis scored 15 points for Trabuco Hills (4-6).

Saddleback 62, Santiago 46--Terrell Foster scored 16 points and Derrick Barnes added 14 to lead Saddleback (5-4).

Servite 60, Los Angeles Loyola 56--Stephen Hogan made a three-pointer late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Hogan finished the game with 15 points. Servite is 6-3.
